Caring Where You Are

Event organised by The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice & Time4Change

The Wisdom Hospice was opened in 1984 and was named after Molly Wisdom
who raised money for a hospice in the Medway area, even though she herself was dying of cancer.
Following her example The Friends of The Wisdom Hospice were able to raise the rest of the funds to build the Hospice.

The Hospice provides specialist, palliative care for individuals and their families facing the diagnosis of a life threatening disease. Based in Medway and Swale it aims to enhance the care provided for, and the quality of life experienced by, those involved. This is achieved through the delivery of direct care, provision of advice and support, and by acting as an educational resource regarding the speciality of palliative care.

Words alone fail to fully capture the excitement and energy of a sponsored firewalk event and with this in mind we have made a couple of short videos of past sponsored firewalk events facilitated by the firewalking company Time4Change, available to watch online below.

As you watch the highly energised walkers cross the twenty foot lanes of burning hot coals and listen to the loud cheering of the crowd and the beat of the drums, why not imagine yourself as one of those walkers and experience the deep satisfaction which comes from the knowledge you have achieved something truly extraordinary and in the process raised vital funds for The Wisdom Hospice.

Note: Sometimes due to high bandwidth demands, the videos can take a few moments to load. If this is the case, press the pause button and wait a few moments.

Watching the excitement and energy of a sponsored firewalking event invariably makes people want to find out more about the art and science of firewalking; it's history, how it is possible and what happens on the actual night of an event. With this in mind, the events company Time4Change have compiled a frequently asked questions document which can be read on-line follow this link or you can download the document through the link (FAQ) at the bottom of the page.

Once you have imagined just how good it will feel to take part in The Wisdom Hospice Halloween Sponsored Firewalk Event, all you have to do to ensure your place on the walk is contact Fundraising Co-ordinator Mrs Emma Dengate at the above number/email or alternatively you can instantly download the application and other forms at the bottom of the page, print them off and return them to the address provided.

How much do I need to raise so I can participate in this event?
In order to secure your place on the event we ask each participant to provide a  deposit of £25 and pledge to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship monies (but obviously we encourage you to raise far more!). We provide you with a firewalking DVD to show potential sponsors and information sheets, posters (to put up for example on your workplace notice board) and sponsor forms are available from the buttons at the bottom of the page. We also suggest you direct your sponsors to this web page and the video through emails or mobile texts (just copy the link "www.t4c.org.uk/wisdomhospice") so they can see for themselves exactly what you are undertaking in aid of The Wisdom Hospice).

A GREAT WAY FOR PARTICIPANTS TO COLLECT THEIR SPONSORSHIP MONEY ON-LINE
IS TO VISIT THE JUST GIVING WEBSITE

A way of saving lots of time and energy collecting sponsorship money is to go to the Just Giving website and create your own personal fundraising account, which takes about five minutes to do. This consists of an individual web page complete with details of the fundraising event (don't forget to add the link to this page as well). You then email the page's address to everyone you know and people can sponsor you by making an electronic payment via credit/debit card or PayPal. It's very quick and easy and in addition to this, Just Giving automatically collects Gift Aid on behalf of each charity (under the Gift Aid scheme, charities can reclaim an extra 25% in tax on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer which makes each charity around £12 for every £10 donated)

For more information about Just Giving please click on this link

In addition to this, many companies now offer matching sponsorship and will donate an amount equal to what you raise personally to the charity concerned. Why not find out if the company or organisation you work for offers this. It's a great way to boost the amount you raise!

Note: All cheques should be made payable to "The Friends of The Wisdom Hospice"

Not only is this a once in a lifetime experience, compared to other ‘extreme’ events such as sponsored parachuting or trekking abroad, both the amounts you are required to raise and the initial costs are far lower (which means a bigger percentage of what you raise goes straight to The Wisdom Hospice). Firewalking is such an ‘unusual’ activity that people are not only more willing to sponsor an individual who is taking part in a fundraising firewalk; they are far more likely to offer higher levels of sponsorship.

APPLICATION FORM, SPONSOR FORM, FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS SHEET & POSTERS ARE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND PRINT OFF BY CLICKING ON THE ICONS BELOW.
